Structure Name: Redheugh Gasworks: Gas Holders

Description:
 
Gasholders with external iron lattices. The only surviving element of the Redheugh Gas Works, which was cleared for the Gateshead National Garden Festival.

Chronology:

  • 1876   Redheugh Gasworks opened for the Newcastle and Gateshead Gas Company, at a cost of £100,000.
        Entities Involved:
              Newcastle and Gateshead Gas Company: Owners.
              Wyatt, V: Designer.
  • 1890s   Gas holders constructed, using a steel lattice frame.
  • 1960s   Gas production ceased.
  • 1990   Gas holders painted for the Gateshead National Garden Festival.
