The Norman McCord Collection

Born and raised in the North East of England Norman McCord is a prominent local historian and archaeologist. He is currently an Emeritus Professor within the School of Historical Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

From the late 1950s until the mid 1970s Norman McCord undertook, on a part-time basis, a number of aerial surveys of the North-East region. SINE has digitised over 750 of the resulting aerial photographs, covering both rural and urban landscapes.

In Spring 2004 Norman McCord was asked to select a number of his favourite aerial images and provide SINE with further information about them. Over the following pages his selection can be viewed together with notes he has made explaining which features can be seen and their archaeological and socio-historical significance.
