The Search Begins
When SINE began to digitise a series of sketches by local artist William Henry Charlton (1846-1918) little background information was available. Although it was generally accepted the sketches depicted areas of old North Shields it was difficult to place them more precisely.
SINE began to research the old quayside area using the local studies sources available at Central Library in North Shields. Information was gleaned from old maps, newspaper cuttings, trade directories and census returns.
The result of this detective work was the successful identification of all the locations in William Charlton's sketches of old North Shields. Here's how we did it…
