Structure: At the SINE Project the term ‘structure’ is used to define any fixed element of the built environment. A structure within the SINE Project could therefore be anything from a signpost to a castle to a sculpture. An important caveat to this definition is that if a structure is to be entered into our database then its manmade elements must be visible within the images. For example a reservoir (as a body of water) would not be entered, however we would enter structural elements of a reservoir such as a dam or sluice gate. The SINE Project is also interested in structural elements (i.e. component parts of a structure — for example a window in a house) and to a lesser extent in supersets of structures (e.g. towns, docks, farms etc), however the emphasis within the SINE Project has been strongly on individual structures and their elements. Within the SINE database we also record whether or not a structure is ‘extant’. When a structure is described as being extant we are stating that it is visible from the ground and identifiable as being a particular structure type, although we would also describe as extant structures that have been incorporated within other structures and as such may, or may not, be visible.
