Simple Search

You can use this page to search the SINE collection using one or more of the available options:

• Structure Name
• Place Name
• Structure Type
• General Search

 Structure Name

If you know the name or part of the name of the structure you are looking for images of, you can type it in this box and click ‘Search’. For instance, searching on ‘Tyne Bridge’ will give a result including the NewTyne Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne; HaltwhistleTyne Bridge and Ovingham (Tyne) Bridge.

Place Name

To search for images of structures at a certain place, type the name of the place you are interested in and click ‘Search’ or press Enter. This will give you a choice of place names in the North East containing the name you searched for, e.g. entering ‘amble’ will give you a list of place names including Amble– Northumberland; Brambles Farm – Middlesbrough; and Ambleside – Cumbria. Once you have selected the place you are interested in, you can choose a search radius from the drop-down menu below. The search results will be all of the images containing structures within the selected distance from your chosen place.

Structure Type

Type the kind of structure you are interested in into the ‘Structure Type’ box and click Search or press Enter. This will retrieve images which contain structure types that match your search. For example, if you enter ‘church’ the search will retrieve all images with structures containing the word ‘church’ – church, churchyard, parish church, Roman Catholic church etc...

General Search

You can also search the text related to any image or structure for certain words, or a specific phrase, using the ‘General Search’ box. For example, searching for ‘ratcliffe’ will retrieve one result (whereas searching under place name for Ratcliffe would retrieve images in and around Ratcliffe, Northumberland). You can search for multiple words, or, by clicking the box marked ‘exact match’, a specific phrase.

Note that you can use the * wildcard to look for words beginning with a particular set of characters, so for example 'monument*' would retrieve all records containing the word 'monument', 'monuments' or 'monumental'.
