Structural Images of the North East

Browse by structure type

You can browse our images according to the type of structures you are looking for in two ways:

  • Select a structure type from the thesaurus, e.g. if you were looking for images of churches you would select ‘Religious Ritual and Funerary’. Clicking on the plus symbol will give you a list of structure types within the category ‘Religious Ritual and Funerary’. If you are unsure about the definition of a structure type, clicking on a term will give you a brief definition, and two buttons – info button takes you to a definition of the structure type; and search button will search the collection for all images containing a structure of that type.

The number in brackets beside each structure type indicates how many images of that structure type the SINE collection contains – so of 799 images containing COMMERCIAL buildings, 274 contain EATING AND DRINKING ESTABLISHMENTS, 3 contain BAKERIES and so on.

  • Type the structure type you are interested in into the box at the bottom of the list and click Search or press Enter. This will retrieve images which contain structure types that match your search. For example, if you enter ‘church’ the search will retrieve all images with structures containing the word ‘church’ – church, churchyard, parish church, Roman Catholic church etc...
