A Distant Day...

Sketch of North Shields (1912), William Henry Charlton collection

North Shields (1912)

A contemporary quote from the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle perhaps best summarised Charlton's work:

"The pictures he now produces will have many virtues when time has effaced the opalescent hues of others whose works are now preferred. Mr. Charlton paints for a distant day."
2 November 1899

At the time these words were written perhaps few could have predicted their significance. To a modern generation the true value of Charlton's paintings and sketches is not restricted to their artistic merit alone. They have become an important historical record of an area in Tyne & Wear which has undergone radical re-development throughout the last one hundred years and give a glimpse of the past as seen through the eyes of a Victorian gentleman artist.
